5 Legitimate Work-From-Home Jobs for At-Home Parents

The delicate balance between being making money for your family and being available for the people you love is an ongoing tight-rope dance for many families. Working from home sounds like an attractive compromise. But with poor-paying, time-sucking gigs and flat-out scams, it is hard to know what is legitimate.

Yet flexible, telecommuting options are available for parents opting to work from home. You just have to know where to look and how to make the most of your skills to earn the best pay for your time.
While fields like graphic design, web design and e-commerce were once the dominant work from home options, positions in health-care, education, customer service and sales are now growing fields for at-home-workers, according to FlexJobs.com, a website that tracks flexible employment and offers a subscription-based job board.

The company says that the majority of telecommuting job-seekers are looking for positions as administrative assistants or writers. While those options are available (see below) human resource administrators recommend that you think about what specialized talents you have (or what specialized skills you can acquire) to put you ahead of the pack.
Do you have teaching experience? Look into tutoring options or even virtual teaching at the university level through an online program. Speak other languages? Translation or transcription could be for you. The demand for work in medical transcription outpaces the supply of trained candidates and getting a certification in medical transcription greatly helps you.
According to Flexjobs.com there are some very lucrative positions that are work-from-home for parents with executive experience. If you’re looking for something right now, here are some employers hiringflexible workers in November.
Here are five great — legit! — jobs that parents can do from home.
1. WriterThere is a limitless appetite for new content across all media platforms and that means there is a constant need for writers. By providing content for blogs and websites of media outlets as well as companies and non-profits, a writer earns money by individual post or by contract. Rates range greatly from a few dollars for a post to $1 or more a word.
2. Administrative AssistantOffice support for entrepreneurs and small businesses does not need to be housed near that office – especially if the company has no office. Your work as an administrative assistant could involve organizing schedules, handling travel arrangements, managing social media profiles or dealing with correspondence. Median pay is $14 to $18 an hour.
3. Transcription
General transcription can range from ad hoc work for journalists, businesses or non-profits, paying $.75 to $1.50 per audio minute. But with a background in a specialized field, such as healthcare, the pay goes up. Many healthcare transcription jobs require certification through a program offered by Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI), formerly the American Association for Medical Transcription. Medical transcription, for which workers earn about $34,000 a year, is expected to grow in the next decade.
4. Customer Service
Work in customer service from your home by handling in-bound calls providing assistance for a company or organization. If you have a background or experience in a particular field, you may do well to search for a company that will value specific knowledge for customer service. Expect to make $12 to $16 an hour.

5. Tutor
Previous teaching experience may not be necessary to tutor children or even adults. But if you have a background in education there are plenty of online programs looking for virtual teachers. Pay ranges greatly depending on the frequency of lessons and the institution.
