Telecommuters often request office supplies and items such
as keyboards, monitors and phones as well as services from employers. But
two-thirds of company purchasing departments in a survey by Staples Advantage
say that they don't factor in telecommuters when doing budgets.
Fifty-nine percent of procurement professionals surveyed in
the study by Staples Advantage, the B2B unit of Staples (NASDAQ:SPLS), buy
products for telecommuters, while 33% say that telecommuters pay out of their
own pocket.
"For many companies and employees, telecommuting makes
good business sense," said Neil Ringel, executive vice president of
Staples Advantage. "However, if organizations don't budget accordingly and
provide appropriate oversight, there is significant risk for rogue spending and
inconsistencies in the tools provided to telecommuters. Organizations can
reduce their overall spend with upfront planning, streamlined purchasing and
procurement oversight."
